Dr. Juan J. Manfredi
Former Program Director in the Division of Mathematical Sciences, MPS Directorate
At NSF I observed mathematics from an advantageous point of view. Being able to talk to colleagues from all disciplines was an enormously enriching experience. Although I could not keep my research program at full speed, the investment in perspective and outlook in the mathematical sciences paid off handsomely when I returned to my university. My research was invigorated and better aligned with other disciplines. Learning how NSF works was excellent training for a future higher education administrator. I served as Department Chair and then Associate Dean. Currently as Vice Provost, I have a broad portfolio of responsibilities that includes two major schools and all undergraduate programs. I can say without hesitation that my time at NSF broadened my professional aspirations, and made me a better researcher and administrator.
