CISE MOURNS LOSS OF DR. STEPHEN MAHANEY

Dr. Stephen Mahaney, a Senior Advisor in the Computer and Information Science and Engineering Directorate at the National Science Foundation, died after a sudden illness on June 26, 2007.  He is survived by his wife Jean-Marie and two daughters, Kylen and Kate.

Dr. Mahaney received his PhD in Computer Science from Cornell University in 1981, after which he served as a member of the technical staff at AT&T Bell Laboratories, as Associate Professor of Computer Science at the University of Arizona and as Associate Director for Research for DIMACS (the Center for Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science) at Rutgers University.  At NSF, he helped shape the Computing Research Infrastructure program, providing able and energetic management of both that program and its predecessors.  In addition, he managed several center-scale activities within the Directorate.  Previously, he served as the Senior Advisor for Budget, Management and Planning for the CISE Directorate.

Steve brought curiosity and a broad view of science to our organization and others.  His experience, expertise, and collegiality were valued by everyone who knew him.

Steve's friends have established a memorial fund in his memory.  Details are available at  http://www.cs.umass.edu/~immerman/SteveMahaney/.

Please send condolence cards to:
