Micro Pills Could Deliver Drugs on Demand

Vesicle membranes that collapse when cooled may someday deliver minute payloads of medicines.

A scanning electron micrograph shows a vesicle membrane that wrinkles and collapses when its temperature drops, forcing out whatever might be inside the tiny ball. Developed by NSF CAREER awardee Sahraoui Chaieb of the Univerity of Illinois at Urbana Champaign and his colleagues, the new tool may someday deliver minute liquid payloads of medicine or cosmetics.
