Clues to Waterproof Glue Found in Antarctic Creature

Photo shows Sam Bowser holding a sea star found at McMurdo Sound.

A "touch tank" in the Albert P. Crary Science and Engineering Center at NSF's McMurdo Station contains some of the creatures found in McMurdo Sound. The vital organs of the sea star Sam Bowser is holding are in its many legs; it effectively has no body.

The bag contains Sam Bowser's foram samples as retrieved by a siphon deployed into the dive hole that juts off NSF's McMurdo Station, Antarctica. Air pumped through the siphon creates suction that allows divers to corral forams into the net bag, much like an enormous version of the siphons used to clean home aquaria.
