An image of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), taken with a scanning electron microscope. The multiple round bumps on the cell surface represent sites of assembly and budding of HIV particles. HIV is the pathogen responsible for Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS).
