How Liquid Crystal Displays Work in an eWriter

Illustration showing how liquid crystal molecules become images in the Boogie Board eWriter.

Pictured: (a) Boogie Board® eWriter; (b) magnified image of characters written on the board -- line thickness varies with writing pressure; (c) scanning electron microscope photograph of the eWriter's surface morphology; (d) illustration of the liquid crystal (LC) molecules orientation inside the display--the focal conic texture is the display non-reflective state and the planar texture is the display reflective state; and (e) illustration of a chiral molecule, which aligns the LC molecules in a helix, allowing the display to reflect light.
