EEC's Engineering Research Centers promote partnerships among researchers in different disciplines and between industry and universities. They focus their research programs on transformational engineered systems and produce technological innovations that strengthen the competitive position of industry. ERCs form pre-college partnerships to bring engineering knowledge to the classroom and stimulate interest in engineering careers. ERC integrate research and education with an innovation ecosystem that has the proven capacity to produce ERC graduates who are leaders in technological innovation, and the ability to assume leadership roles in industry, academe, and government. These centers have produced a steady stream of advances in technology, enhanced the translation of technology to marketable products with tens of billions of dollars in market value.
The Network for Computational Nanotechnology (NCN) was established at Purdue University in 2002 as a service facility to offer researchers the tools to explore nanoscale phenomena through theory, modeling, and simulation while also developing enhancements to science and engineering education. Through its cyber platform, nanoHUB.org, NCN has become a powerful resource for the worldwide nanoscience and nanoengineering community and currently serves over 200,000 researchers, educators, students, and other professionals worldwide. NCN was reconfigured in 2012 and renewed. It is configured as a Cyber Platform at Purdue University, through nanoHUB, where materials that serve a broad range of fields are on line. The renewed configuration focuses additional NSF support on two content development nodes: nanoBIO, housed at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign and Nano-engineered Electronic Device Simulation (NEEDS) at Purdue University. The products of these nodes also will be on line through nanoHUB.
