This scanning electron microscope (SEM) image shows ZnO nanowires grown on an Si substrate. The average width of these rods is 40 to 50 nanometers, and they appear to be cylindrical.

This work was supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation (CCR 01-03096, "Feasibility Studies on ZnO Nanostructures and their Device Applications"), an exploratory research project in the Nanoscale Science and Engineering Initiative. The goals of the project were to (a) grow ZnO-based nanoscale structures including nanotips and nanotip arrays, nanowires and quantum dots; and (b) investigate the broad applications of these ZnO nanostructures in UV optoelectronics, biosensors and advanced communications. The ZnO materials are grown using metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD).
