Aseismic Slip as a Barrier to Earthquake Propagation

A research team made up of scientists from Caltech and their partners in Peru and France report on their analysis of GPS data from the 2007 Pisco earthquake in Peru. They found, in part, that 50 percent of the postseismic slippage is aseismic--movement along a fault that occurs without any accompanying seismic waves. Full Story

The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent federal agency that supports fundamental research and education across all fields of science and engineering. In fiscal year (FY) 2012, its budget was $7.0 billion. NSF funds reach all 50 states through grants to nearly 2,000 colleges, universities and other institutions.
