Researchers Create Super-Small Single ElectronTransistor

A University of Pittsburgh-led team has created a transistor that provides a building block for new, more powerful computer memories, advanced electronic materials and the basic components of quantum computers. The transistor's central component--an island that operates with the addition of only one or two electrons--could also be used as an artificial atom for developing new classes of artificial electronic materials.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent federal agency that supports fundamental research and education across all fields of science and engineering. In fiscal year (FY) 2012, its budget was $7.0 billion. NSF funds reach all 50 states through grants to nearly 2,000 colleges, universities and other institutions.
