Rice's 'Quantum Critical' Theory Gets Experimental Boost

New evidence this week supports a theory developed five years ago at Rice University to explain the electrical properties of unconventional superconductors and other classes of materials that have long vexed scientists. Physicists say the new findings published in Nature Materials, represent an important step toward the ultimate goal of creating a unified theoretical description of quantum effects in electronic materials at the border of magnetism and superconductivity. The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent federal agency that supports fundamental research and education across all fields of science and engineering. In fiscal year (FY) 2012, its budget was $7.0 billion. NSF funds reach all 50 states through grants to nearly 2,000 colleges, universities and other institutions.
