Most Vertebrates--Including Humans--Descended From Ancestor With Sixth Sense

A study in the Oct. 11 issue of Nature Communications that caps more than 25 years of work finds that the vast majority of vertebrates--some 30,000 species of land animals (including humans) and a roughly equal number of ray-finned fishes--descended from a common ancestor that had a well-developed electroreceptive system. The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent federal agency that supports fundamental research and education across all fields of science and engineering. In fiscal year (FY) 2012, its budget was $7.0 billion. NSF funds reach all 50 states through grants to nearly 2,000 colleges, universities and other institutions.
