Viral Disease--Particularly From Herpes--Gaining Interest As Possible Cause of Coral Decline

bleached coral As corals continue to decline in abundance around the world, researchers are turning their attention to a possible cause that's almost totally unexplored--viral disease. It appears that corals harbor many different viruses-- particularly herpes. They also are home to the adenoviruses and other viral families that can cause human colds and gastrointestinal disease. The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent federal agency that supports fundamental research and education across all fields of science and engineering. In fiscal year (FY) 2016, its budget is $7.5 billion. NSF funds reach all 50 states through grants to nearly 2,000 colleges, universities and other institutions.
