Driving Without a Blind Spot May Be Closer Than It Appears

A driver's side mirror that eliminates the dangerous "blind spot" has received a U.S. patent. The subtly curved mirror, invented by a Drexel University mathematics professor, dramatically increases the field of view with minimal distortion. Its smooth surface is analogous to a disco ball made of many smaller mirror faces, with each face's direction calculated to manipulate the direction of reflected light so drivers see a wide, not-too-distorted view of the scene behind them. The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent federal agency that supports fundamental research and education across all fields of science and engineering.
