Smooth As Silk "Transient Electronics" Dissolve in Body or Environment

A research team, led by biomedical engineers at Tufts University, has created tiny, biocompatible electronic devices, encapsulated in silk, that dissolve harmlessly into their surroundings after a precise amount of time. These new "transient electronics" promise medical implants that never need surgical removal, as well as environmental monitors and consumer electronics that can become compost rather than trash. The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent federal agency that supports fundamental research and education across all fields of science and engineering. In fiscal year (FY) 2012, its budget was $7.0 billion. NSF funds reach all 50 states through grants to nearly 2,000 colleges, universities and other institutions.
