Pinpointing How Nature’s Benefits Link to Human Well Being

Jack Liu in the Wolong Nature Reserve Scientists at Michigan State University's Center for Systems Integration and Sustainability, in two parallel papers published in this week's journal PLOS ONE, develop an entirely new integrated approach to quantify human dependence on ecosystem services and human well-being so as to promote the understanding of the linkages between them-an important step toward improved understanding, monitoring and management of coupled human and natural systems. The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent federal agency that supports fundamental research and education across all fields of science and engineering. In fiscal year (FY) 2016, its budget is $7.5 billion. NSF funds reach all 50 states through grants to nearly 2,000 colleges, universities and other institutions.
