Astronomer at national observatory continue to watch Sn2014J

February 19, 2014

image of SN2014J taken through an infrared filter Two teams of astronomers from Kitt Peak National Observatory continue to observe the supernova Sn2014J  in nearby galaxy M 82 that was spotted in late January 2014. Astronomers have determined this supernova is a type Ia. These occur in a binary star system composed of a dense white dwarf star and a companion star, either another white dwarf or a bloated red giant star. Full Story

The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent federal agency that supports fundamental research and education across all fields of science and engineering. In fiscal year (FY) 2014, its budget is $7.2 billion. NSF funds reach all 50 states through grants to nearly 2,000 colleges, universities and other institutions. Each year, NSF receives about 50,000 competitive requests for funding, and makes about 11,500 new funding awards. NSF also awards about $593 million in professional and service contracts yearly.
