Slide Image: A typhoon caused a road washout limiting access to Yuan Yang Lake for about a week during and after a typhoon in October 2004. A photograph shows a paved road on a forested mountainside severely washed out by the typhoon. Several people walk on a precarious path (the remains of the road) along the washout, while a backhoe on the far side attempts to smooth out the slope.

Access to field sites can be difficult or impossible during important disturbance events.
