Notes:
Background photo: a long-duration balloon being launched to study cosmic rays above Antarctica. Two graphs superimposed: First graph shows that the “ellipse filter” developed to identify elliptical tracks of cosmic rays has been turned in a surprising new direction: to detect anthrax. Four Bacillus species cluster into distinct populations on the graph. A second graph shows that a sudden increase in relative humidity makes anthrax spores grow rapidly in size.
