Main Finding

Just over one-third (35%) of 8th grade students performed at or above the proficient level in math in 2011.

Approximately one-third (32%) of 8th grade students scored at or above the proficient level in science in 2011.

Key Observations

  • Performance on the math assessment was nearly equal for 8th grade males and females, with a slightly higher percentage of males (9%) than females (7%) scoring at the advanced level in 2011.
  • Few (13%–20%) 8th grade black, Hispanic, or American Indian/Alaska Native students scored at or above the proficient level in math, compared with 44% of whites and 55% of Asians/Pacific Islanders.
  • Over one-fifth (22%) of 8th grade Asian/Pacific Islander students scored at the advanced level in math in 2011.
  • A somewhat higher percentage of males (35%) than females (28%) scored at or above the proficient level in science in 8th grade.
  • Few (10%–20%) 8th grade black, Hispanic, or American Indian/Alaska Native students scored at or above the proficient level in science, compared with 43% of whites and 41% of Asians/Pacific Islanders.
  • Few students from any group scored at the advanced level in science in 8th grade.
