Main Finding

40% of 4th grade students performed at or above the proficient level in math in 2011.

34% of 4th grade students performed at or above the proficient level in science in 2009.

Key Observations

  • A slightly higher percentage of males (42%) than females (39%) scored at or above the proficient level in math in 4th grade.
  • Few (17%–24%) 4th grade black, Hispanic, or American Indian/Alaska Native students scored at or above the proficient level in math, compared with 52% of whites and 62% of Asians/Pacific Islanders.
  • There was a large gap between the percentage of Asian/Pacific Islander students (19%) and the percentages of black, Hispanic, and American Indian/Alaska Native students (between 1% and 2%) scoring at the advanced level in math.
  • A slightly higher percentage of males (35%) than females (32%) scored at or above the proficient level in science in 4th grade.
  • Few (11%–17%) 4th grade black, Hispanic, or American Indian/Alaska Native students scored at or above the proficient level in science, compared with 47% of whites and 45% of Asians/Pacific Islanders.
  • Few students from any group scored at the advanced level in science in 4th grade.
