Dr. Karen Symms Gallagher
Dean, Rossier School of Education, University of Southern California
Karen Symms Gallagher, the Emery Stoops and Joyce King-Stoops chair at the University of
Southern California, was appointed dean of the Rossier School of Education in 2000. She received a
B.A. from Western Washington University, an M.S.Ed. from the University of Washington, and a Ph.D.
from Purdue University.
Previously, Dr. Gallagher was dean of the school of education at the University of Kansas.
She also served as a professor at the University of Cincinnati and Loyola University of Chicago.
She was the staff director of Ohio's Commission on Education Improvement. She also taught high
school and middle school and was a school administrator in Washington State, North Carolina, and
Indiana.
Dr. Gallagher has held numerous national leadership positions including the presidency of the
Council of Academic Deans at Research Education Institutions (CADREI) and serving on the board of
directors for the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE).
In Kansas, Dr. Gallagher chaired the Kansas Professional Standards Board during its
reconfiguration of teacher licensing to a standards-based system, and she currently represents the
Association of Independent California Colleges and Universities (AICCU) on the California Commission
on Teacher Credentialing.
Dr. Gallagher has published numerous articles and books about teacher education policy, the
politics of teacher education reform, and the impact of magazine rankings on administrative
behavior.
