National Science Foundation Guide to Programs Fiscal Year 1996

How to Use this Publication

The NSF Guide to Programs is a compilation of funding opportunities for research and education in science, mathematics, and engineering. General descriptions of NSF programs, research areas, and deadline and target dates for proposal submission are provided in each chapter. Many NSF programs offer announcements concerning specific proposal requirements. To obtain additional information about these requirements, contact the appropriate NSF program offices listed in this Guide.

Any changes in NSF's fiscal year 1996 programs occurring after presstime for the Guide to Programs will be announced in the NSF Bulletin, available monthly except July and August at no charge, and in individual program announcements. The Bulletin is available as a printed publication and can be accessed electronically. To receive a sample printed copy of the Bulletin write to: Editor, NSF Bulletin, National Science Foundation, 4201 Wilson Boulevard, Room 1245, Arlington, VA 22230. Below are further instructions on how to obtain electronic or printed copies of NSF publications.

How to Obtain NSF Publications

Many NSF publications are available electronically through STIS (NSF's Science and Technology Information System), World Wide Web (WWW), and Gopher. Full instructions appear in the flyer Getting NSF Information and Publications (NSF 95-64) which is printed in this Guide. We highly recommend that you use the electronic methods for fast, easy access.

Copies of publications in printed form are also available, at no charge, and may be ordered a number of ways. By mail, write to Forms and Publications, NSF, Room P15, 4201 Wilson Boulevard, Arlington, VA 22230. By telephone, call (703) 306-1130. By FAX, dial (703) 644-4278. Electronically via Internet, address message to pubs@nsf.gov . In your request, include the NSF publication number and title, your name, and your complete mailing address.

Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA)

The CFDA provides the user with a comprehensive, up to date, descriptive listing of assistance programs administered by federal departments and agencies. Information contacts with telephone numbers and addresses are included. The Catalog is published by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) and General Services Administration (GSA). Copies can be ordered from Government Printing Office (GPO). The assigned CFDA numbers for each NSF Directorate are as follows:

NSF Outreach Service

NSF's Outreach Service encourages NSF staff members on official business to give orientations about NSF funding opportunities at all institutions, especially those that are not among the leading recipients of NSF funds. These include predominantly minority or women's colleges and universities and primarily undergraduate institutions.

The Outreach Service will respond to written requests for NSF speakers by attempting to arrange, where possible, for traveling staff to visit the requesting institution. To avoid duplication, requests should be made through a research or similar office of the requesting institution. Because of limited availability of staff time and travel funds, NSF is not able to respond to all requests. Priority will be given to requests for presentations and visits that would serve several institutions at the same time.

Interested persons should contact Patrick M. Olmert, Outreach Coordinator, NSF Office of Legislative and Public Affairs, 4201 Wilson Boulevard, Arlington, VA 22230.
