Other Funding Sources for Network Connections

bullet Advanced Networking with Minority Serving Institutions
The overall goal of this project is to assist Minority-Serving Institutions as they develop the campus infrastructure and national connections to become and remain full participants in the emerging Internet-based "Information Age."

bullet Consortium for School Networking
This non-profit group gives updates on policy discussions related to bringing technology to schools.

bullet FCC E-Rate Website
The FCC is working to bring every school and library in America into the information age. This site provides many additional links to programs and initiatives that relate to making telecommunications technology available to a broad base of users.

bullet National Science Foundation CISE Minority Institutions Infrastructure
CISE Minority Institutions Infrastructure provides awards to aid efforts that might significantly expand the numbers of minority students attracted to and retained in computer and information science and engineering disciplines. Eligible institutions must be minority institutions (defined by significant percentages of minority students). The program considers a variety of activities including, but not limited to, research programs involving minority students, curriculum development projects, mentoring, and outreach. Both 1-year planning grants and continuing grants of up to 5 years in duration are awarded. Significant matching for the latter (usually 25%) is expected.

bullet National Science Foundation Directorate for Education and Human Resources

bullet NIH National Library of Medicine
NIH/NLM funds Internet Connections in three ways:
  • Internet Connection Grants (Program Announcement) increase the pace at which health-related institutions become part of the Internet. Eligibility: Domestic, public or private, non-profit institutions engaged in health sciences administration, education, research, and/or clinical care. Support: For single institutions, up to $30,000; consortia, up to $50,000.

  • Information Access Grants (fact sheet) facilitate access to and delivery of health science information through computer and telecommunication technology. Online access to NLM databases, provision for providing documents (Loansome Doc fact sheet), and user training should be elements of the project. Eligibility: Same as Internet Connection Grants, and primarily directed to small to medium-sized health science institutions, for example, hospitals. Support: Single institutions up to $12,000 for one year; consortia up to $12,000 for each participating institution for one year.

  • Information Systems Grants (fact sheet) are distinguished from Access Grants by the scope and nature of the technological means used. May encompass whole systems, seek to establish connectivity of system components, or provide support for improvements to the infrastructure. Eligibility: Same as Internet Connection Grants, and primarily directed to larger health science institutions such as academic health science institutions and hospitals. The organizational unit within the institution which is directly responsible for the project's conduct may be the library or otherinformation service/research-related department. Support: approximately $50,000 to $150,000 per year up to three years.

bullet SURA CrossRoads Initiative
The basic purpose of this initiative is to address the infrastructure needs of the largest possible community while maintaing a clear focus on SURA member requirements.

bullet U.S. Department of Agriculture Local Dial-Up Internet Program
The Local Dial-Up Internet Grant Program is designed to provide financing to furnish, in rural areas, local dial-up Internet access where it does not currently exist. Grant funds may be utilized for the acquisition, construction, and installation of equipment, facilities and systems.
