AAAS Fellow Biography

Arlene Hamburg

Dr. Arlene Hamburg
AAAS Fellow
Directorate for Engineering
Division of Chemical, Bioengineering, Evironmental, and Transport Systems
Class of 2013

Arlene Hamburg was trained as a chemist (M.S., electrochemistry, University of Kansas; Ph.D., photochemistry, Purdue University). After 3 years in academics, she worked for 26 years at a major, global chemical company initially examining the metabolic behavior of agrochemicals in plant and animal species. Positions as a regulatory manager and then a risk assessor followed. Justifying regulatory submissions and conducting risk assessments introduced her to the need for efficient access to data and information. She envisioned and was responsible for the implementation, deployment, and cross-R&D integration of user-accepted databases for managing core primary and secondary data from field and laboratory studies. This private-sector experience with regulated materials sparked an interested in science policy which she is pursuing initially as a AAAS Fellow.
