Julie Martin comes to the AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellowship from her faculty position in the Department of Engineering and Science Education at Clemson University, where her research focuses on social factors affecting the recruitment, retention, and career development of underrepresented students in engineering.  She was awarded a NSF CAREER grant from the Division of Engineering Education and Centers entitled, “Influences of Social Capital on Underrepresented Engineering Students’ Academic and Career Decisions.”  Prior to her appointment at Clemson, she was the Director of Engineering Undergraduate Student Recruitment and Retention at the University of Houston.    In her fellowship, she is working in the Directorate for Education and Human Resources (OAD) and the Division of Human Resources and Management on STEM education and workforce development.  Julie’s Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering is from Virginia Tech, and she completed postdoctoral work in Bioengineering at Clemson.
