Matt is a paleontologist specializing in the study of diatoms, a type of single-celled algae.? His research has focused on using microfossils to reconstruct past climate conditions in Antarctica. He has participated in multinational expeditions to Ross Island, Antarctica, and to the Southern Ocean aboard the German research vessel, Polarstern. Fluency in German led to the opportunity to pursue climate research at the Alfred Wegener Institute (Bremerhaven, Germany) through a Fulbright research grant. He has gone on to become a fellow at the Byrd Polar Research Center (Ohio State University), where he explored the societal implications of rapid climate change.? In addition to his scientific background, Matt is an accomplished guitarist who holds a music degree from the Berklee College of Music.
