Sean Watts is a plant ecologist whose research emphasizes the shifting roles of native herbivores in human-altered landscapes and pragmatic conservation in the face of human activity. Sean taught ecology and environmental policy at Santa Clara University where he challenged students to recognize the constraints on science in the policy process and developed programs to increase undergraduate participation in research. ?At NSF Sean supports Dimensions of Biodiversity ? a 10-year program to characterize and understand Earth’s biodiversity.? His fellowship work includes broadening participation in the basic natural sciences, coordinating interagency and international partnerships, and developing promotional materials.? Through research, teaching and public outreach, Sean seeks to bridge the gap between conservation ecology and society by engaging communities in the science that affects them.? Sean is a native of Alexandria, VA, received his BA in Biology from the University of Virginia and PhD from the University of California, Santa Barbara.
