Yaihara Fortis Santiago obtained her bachelor’s degree in Biology from the University of Puerto Rico, R?o Piedras in 2005.? As an undergraduate, she participated in several research programs aimed at promoting diversity in biomedical research.

In 2011, Yaihara obtained her Ph.D., in Neuroscience from Brandeis University, in Waltham, Massachusetts.? Her doctoral work focused in the role of gustatory cortex in learning processes. In August 2012, she finished her work as a Ruth L. Kirschstein postdoctoral fellow (NRSA Biology Training Grant from the National Institutes of Health) at Brandeis University, where she complemented her doctoral work using in vivo electrophysiology recordings and pharmacological techniques to study the role of the gustatory cortex in multisensory integration.

In September of 2012, she joined the ENG/ Emerging Frontiers in Research and Innovation Office as a Science and Technology policy fellow under the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).?
