CURRENT RESPONSIBILITIES

NSF Beijing Office Director: November 1, 2008 - present

  • represents NSF in China;
  • promotes collaboration between the U.S.-China science and engineering communities;
  • monitors and reports on science and engineering developments and policies in China.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Alex began his career in Washington, DC in April 1973 with the National Academy of Science's China Committee where he helped to reestablish scholarly relations that had been closed off for 25 years. Alex had just completed four years of graduate study in Chinese literature at Cornell University and two years in Asian Studies at Seton Hall University. As an undergraduate at New York University, Alex majored in biology. In his junior year, he was selected as the 1965 Douglas MacArthur Fellowship awardee under the New York-Tokyo Sister City Affiliation. He spent the 1965 school year in Japan studying Japanese language, literature and culture.

In January 1980 Alex moved to NSF to help establish NSF's China Program. In 1986 Alex was sent to Tokyo to direct NSF's Tokyo Regional Office. He spent the first six months in the Ministry of Education as the first American government official allowed into the Ministry as a Foreign Research Fellow. He returned to NSF in 1989 to direct NSF's Japan Program. In 1993 Alex became the Director of the Office of Japan Affairs in the National Academy of Sciences. He returned to NSF in 1996 where he directed NSF's East Asia Program.

Alex retired from NSF in February 2005 but returned in 2008 to direct NSF's Beijing Office. One of Alex's major accomplishments during his career at NSF was the initiative to establish the NSF Beijing Office.

CURRENT RESPONSIBILITIES

Science Program Specialist: December 2005 - present

  • advises Office Director about key S&T developments;
  • prepares reports on S&T priorities/programs/budgets/new developments in China
  • maintains liaison with Chinese counterpart agencies, including the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), the Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), and the Ministry of Education (MOE); and
  • assists visitors from NSF Headquarters, other U.S. government agencies, and American scientists and engineers who visit China.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Sun Bo came to the NSF from the Public Affairs Section (PAS) of the U.S. Embassy in Beijing, where he had been serving as Senior Editor and Supervisory Translator since March 2003. In this capacity, he was responsible for drafting press reports to the Department of State, conducting research on China's policy and trends on topics important to U.S.-China relations, providing analysis on key Chinese reports, maintaining contacts with media and government agencies, and reviewing translations provided by other sections to the PAS. Sun Bo's professional experience also included working as Program Associate for fund-raising and project cooperation of a technology investment company and as lecturer and program associate at the North China University of Hydroelectric Power and Water Conservancy of the Ministry of Water Resources. Sun has a bachelor's degree in English and a master's degree in Journalism and Communication.

  • manages budget and procurement;
  • handles administrative functions and inquiries regarding both the Office and NSF programs;
  • coordinates with US Embassy Information Management Office;
  • manages distribution of Office reports;
  • coordinates NSF Summer Institute (SI) in China, including contacts with Chinese counterpart organizations (MOST, NSFC, CAS, and China Science and Technology Exchange Center), host scientists and institutions, applicants and participants;

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Before joining NSF in 2005, Shen Yu worked as an International Affairs Coordinator in the Chinese National Information Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and as a Customer Director at an E-commerce company. Shen Yu's personal field of interest is S&T policy in both China and the United States from the unique perspective of systems of audit and oversight. She has over 10 years of experience in building up the US-China relationships in terms of trade, network and S&T collaboration. Shen Yu is a double bachelor of Engineering and Economics.
