NSF Promotes and Advances Scientific Research and Education

The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent Federal agency established in 1950 to promote and advance scientific progress in basic science, engineering and mathematics in the United States. The Foundation does this primarily by sponsoring scientific and engineering research, encouraging and supporting improvements in science education, and fostering scientific information exchange. The Foundation supports these goals through annual investment in about 20,000 awards to academic institutions, private research firms, industrial laboratories, and major research facilities and centers. NSF's program achievements have major scientific impact both nationally and internationally. Nearly 200,000 individuals, ranging from senior scientists working at industrial labs to high school students attending summer science camps, participate in NSF programs.

The Neighborhood

Housed in a 12-story, modern facility surrounding a spacious atrium, NSF is located at Stafford Place, 4201 Wilson Boulevard in the Ballston section of Arlington, Virginia. Our facility is convenient to the metrorail system (Ballston Station, Orange Line), metrobus line connections, hotels, restaurants, shopping malls, and residential areas. NSF is close to the campuses of Marymount University and George Mason University and is just minutes away from downtown Washington, DC, which offers many tourist attractions. Washington National Airport and Dulles International Airport, also nearby, are accessible by public transportation.
