The National Science Foundation is seeking a qualified candidate for a position to be filled in the Division of Biological Infrastructure, Directorate for Biological Sciences. The Division manages and coordinates the development and deployment of networked distributed infrastructure (instrumentation and facilities) to conduct regional and continental scale ecological research activities. The selected candidate will be assigned to the Research Resources Cluster within the Division of Biological Infrastructure (DBI). This position will be filled at the level of Program Director. This position may be filled on a one or two year Visiting Scientist Appointment, under the terms of the Intergovernmental Personnel Act (IPA) or as a Federal Temporary Appointment. Temporary and Visiting Scientist appointments will be made under the Excepted Authority of the NSF Act with a current salary range of $88,369 to $137,713. For Federal temporary appointments of more than one year, the usual civil service benefits (retirement, health and life insurance) are applicable. For Visiting Scientist appointments, individuals are in a non-pay leave status from his/her home institution and are appointed to NSF’s payroll as a Federal employee. NSF withholds Social Security and provides reimbursement to the home institution for fringe benefits. For IPA assignments, the individual remains on the payroll of his/her home institution and the institution continues to administer pay and benefits. NSF reimburses the institution for NSF’s negotiated share of the costs. For more information regarding Visiting Scientist appointments or IPA assignments, visit our website at http://www.nsf.gov//about/career_opps Duties and Responsibilities: As Program Director the incumbent is responsible for the planning and administration of the Program within the framework of legislation, agency policies, missions, objectives, and resources and serves as spokesperson for the Program with regard to the scientific community. The incumbent is responsible for: initiating, developing, implementing, maintaining, and carrying out those procedures and operations necessary to further develop and operate a cutting-edge program to encourage and support research in BIO- related databases and in development of informatics tools for biological sciences; advising the Assistant Director for BIO and advising the Division Directors and the Program Officers of BIO on matters and policies regarding cyber infrastructure as related to biological sciences; advising the BIO research committee on matters pertaining to cyber infrastructure; serving as the Directorate’s representative and liaison with other Foundation directorates, especially the Directorate for Computer Information Science and Engineering (CISE) and the new Office of Cyber Infrastructure to be established within the Office of Director; serving as the Directorate’s and Foundation’s representative and liaison with other agencies and organizations in matters pertaining to cyber infrastructure; and staying abreast of the latest developments in the field of cyber infrastructure as they relate to biological Sciences. Qualifications Required: Applicant must have: · a Ph.D. or equivalent experience in a field of biology relevant to the NSF BIO such as plant biology, environmental biology, and biodiversity · Six or more years of successful research, research administration, and/or managerial experience in biological databases, information sciences, or systems biology · A firm understanding of the importance of cyber infrastructure in biological sciences · Experience working with a broad community of scientist across disciplinary, organizational, and national boundaries · Ability to communicate with a broad range of audiences from STEM professionals to decision makers to the public · Commitment to the goals of “broadening participation” and integration of research and education” HOW TO APPLY; Applications may be transmitted electronically to rotator@nsf.gov.
