For the past half century, mainstream linguistics has focused on developing categorical analyses, based on the assumption that language is a property of the mind of the individual language user. By recognizing the essentially interactive character of language and using quantitative tools to describe it, linguists are now beginning to develop explanations that offer insights into human nature and provide links to other social sciences. |
