FSS Data Entry Program Instructions

Example of How to Export Data

You may have several offices provide you with individual submissions; once they have entered their portion of the data, they must export their data into a file. These exported files can then be imported to combine or aggregate all of these individual submissions into your agency's single submission.

To export the data to a file, you must first exit FSS. At the C:\FSS95> prompt; type FSSIO, and then press the <ENTER> key. (If you select the Exports option from the main screen in FSS, the same directions will be provided). The import/export program's main screen will appear:

Press <Tab> to select the Export Data option, and then press <ENTER>. On the screen that appears, you can specify the drive, path, and name of the file which will contain your exported data. When the screen first appears, it will show all files in your current path which have a file name extension of ".txt." The file can be named anything you want (as long as it has a legitimate DOS name and extension). To change the drive, path, and file name, simply to each of these fields on the screen and enter the correct entry. In our example on the next page, the file being exported to is called "part2.txt" and will reside on the current path (C:\FSS95).

After the file to be exported has been specified, begin the export function by selecting the OK option. If you decide not to export at this time, you can cancel this function by selecting Cancel. When OK is selected, the "OK to Begin Export?" screen will appear:

Once the export is complete, a screen showing the number of records exported will appear, as shown on the next page. (This number will not necessarily agree with the number of institutions for which you entered data; it also includes a count of field of science and engineering records.)
