The FSS PC survey disk has the ability to look up fields of science and engineering. This may be particularly helpful if you are not certain where a particular field should be reported and you don't want to take the time to read through the list of field of science and engineering (FOS) codes provided in the Instructions and Specifications. For example, if you aren't certain where "organic geochemistry" should be reported, you can ask the FSS PC survey disk program to locate it for you.
From either the R&D or the fellowships, traineeships, and training grants (FTTG) field of science and engineering screen, select the Show FOS option. The FOS LOOKUP screen will appear. Within the "WORDS OR TEXT STRING TO LOCATE?" area, simply type in "organic geochemistry" (or any portion, thereof). Then select OK. In our example, we have entered "chem."
A scrollable screen listing all fields of science or engineering which contain the character string entered (e.g., "chem") will appear, as shown on the next page.
You can scroll through this list of fields until the field in which you are interested is highlighted. As shown in the example below, "organic geochemistry" is selected.
Pressing the <ENTER> key will take you back to the field of science and engineering entry screen and the cursor will be placed on the field where the obligations for the field desired (geochemistry) should be reported.
It is also possible to obtain a listing of all disciplines which are included in a particular major field. For example, you want to see a listing of all disciplines which are currently listed under mathematics in the Instructions and Specifications. As you can see from the field of science and engineering entry screen, mathematics is field 21. After selecting the Show FOS option, you could simply enter "21" (the code for mathematics) within the selection area:
When the OK option is selected, a list of all individual mathematics disciplines is displayed:
NOTE: The list of illustrative disciplines included in the Instructions and Specifications is not all-inclusive. If you are not certain where a particular field of science or engineering should be reported, and the field of science and engineering lookup option does not locate the field for you, please contact Hilary Jones (Quantum Research Corporation) by phone at (301) 657-3070 or through the Internet at hjones@qrc.com for assistance.
