2/ NOT SEPARATELY IDENTIFIED BUT INCLUDED UNDER "OTHER S&E ACTIVITIES"
NOTE: SOME TREND SHIFTS ARE RELATED TO INSTITUTIONAL
RECLASSIFICATION. AS OF 1978 TWO LABORATORIES THAT WERE FORMERLY
CONSIDERED ACADEMICALLY ADMINISTERED FEDERALLY FUNDED RESEARCH AND
DEVELOPMENT CENTERS BECAME PART OF THEIR
RESPECTIVE INSTITUTIONS: APPLIED PHYSICS LABORATORY (JOHNS HOPKINS
UNIVERSITY) AND APPLIED RESEARCH LABORATORY (PENNSYLVANIA STATE
UNIVERSITY). DATA FOR THESE LABORATORIES ARE THUS INCLUDED IN THE
ACADEMIC FIGURES FOR 1978-94 BUT ARE EXCLUDED FOR PRIOR YEARS. SIMILARLY
DRAPER LABORATORIES SEPARATED FROM THE MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF
TECHNOLOGY AS OF FISCAL YEAR 1974 TO BECOME AN INDEPENDENT NONPROFIT
INSTITUTION. ACADEMIC DATA SHOWN FOR 1963-73 INCLUDE DRAPER LABORATORIES
WHEREAS THOSE FOR 1974-94 DO NOT.
