These tabulations result from NSF's Survey of Federal Funds for Research and Development, for fiscal years 1998-2000, and from earlier surveys in this series. (See also Federal Funds for Research and Development: Fiscal Years 1998, 1999, and 2000, Volume 48.) They reflect the research portion of research and development (R&D) funding levels as reported by Federal agencies. Totals in these tables are given in obligations for research by field of science and engineering, and selected agency. The research obligations data are further categorized according to basic research and applied research by field of science and engineering.
