The Division of Science Resources Statistics (SRS) fulfills the legislative mandate of the National Science Foundation Act to ...
To carry out this mandate, SRS designs, supports, and directs periodic surveys as well as a variety of other data collections and research projects. These surveys yield the materials for SRS staff to compile, analyze, and disseminate quantitative information about domestic and international resources devoted to science, engineering, and technology.

The preparation of Survey of R&D Funding and Performance by Nonprofit Organizations: Fiscal Years 1996 and 1997, Detailed Statistical Tables was managed by Mary V. Burke, Project Officer, National Science Foundation (NSF), Division of Science Resources Statistics (SRS), Research and Development Statistics Program (RDS), under the overall direction of John E. Jankowski, Program Director, (RDS). Guidance and review were provided by Mary J. Frase, Deputy Division Director, SRS, and Ronald S. Fecso, Chief Mathematical Statistician, SRS. Terri Ford, RDS, prepared the tables. Julia H. Harriston and Tanya R. Gore of the Information and Technology Services Program (ITSP) of SRS provided copyediting, processing, and final composition for this report. John R. Gawalt, Director, ITSP, and SRS' Web team handled electronic publication.
