The following discussion compares access to higher education in general and to the study of science and engineering in particular within three regions-North America, Europe, and Asia. The North American region includes Canada, the United States, and Mexico. The European region includes 22 countries for which
data were available. (See appendix table 2-1.) The Asian region includes only six countries-China, India, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, and Taiwan-but these six represent 77 percent of Asia's, and
44 percent of the world's, population.
