Masters Degree Level
As at the bachelors level, comprehensive institutions make up the largest proportion of the 738 institutions with S& E
programs at the masters level. (See figure 2-6.) However, S& E masters degree production is most highly concentrated in research universities:
Almost 50 percent of the 79,500 S& E masters degrees in 1991 were awarded by this institution type. Comprehensive schools, on the other hand, produce only a quarter of all S& E masters degrees. (See
