Employment of Engineers
Total federal employment of engineers increased 12 percent between 1985 and 1991. The most prevalent engineering specialty within the federal workforce--accounting for over 30 percent of the total number of engineers--is the electrical and electronics subfield. NASA, which employed 12,000 engineers in 1991,
ranks a distant second to DOD in engineering employment. NASA, however, increased its hiring of engineers 30 percent between 1985 and 1991.
