Immigrant Scientists and Engineers


Immigrant scientists and engineers have always been a crucial component of the S& E workforce in the United States. In 1992, nearly 23,000 scientists and engineers immigrated to the United States, 62 percent more than in 1991. The 1992 increase is probably due to enactment of the Immigration Act of 1990, which nearly tripled the number of employment-based visas that can be issued annually.
