Chapter 3: Science & Engineering Indicators 93
International Comparisons
A country's employment of scientists and engineers is a significant indicator of its level of effort in, and relative national priority for, science and technology. International comparisons are
complicated, however, by differences in countries' definitions of specific jobs and in methods of data collection and estimation. Still, international employment data provide insight into the relative strengths of S& E workforces globally. This section presents data and limited comparisons on the S& E workforce in Canada, France, Germany, (click here for footnote 37) Italy,
Japan, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
Footnote 37:
German data in this section are for the former West Germany only.
