Chapter 5: Science & Engineering Indicators 93

Research Participation

A robust trend towards increasing participation in research occurred over the decade of the 1980s. This phenomenon, evident for most age groups in all major fields, appears to have stopped and, in some cases reversed in the early 1990s. (See appendix table 5-17). Between 1979 and 1989, research participation for all doctoral scientists and engineers rose from 67 to 77 percent of total; it roughly stayed at that level, 78 percent, in 1991. This development affected all age groups. This overall pattern is similar when examining only those in faculty positions.
