Chapter 6: Science & Engineering Indicators 93
Preliminary Analysis of New Data
A preliminary analysis of new quantitative and expert-derived data indicates a further narrowing between the group of NIEs (Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, and
Taiwan) and the group of EAEs (China, India, Indonesia, and Malaysia). The new set of data show surprising strength by
Singapore compared to the other newly industrialized economies, improving its scores in three of the four leading indicators. Yet other indicators suggest that Singapore's high-tech strength is
narrow compared to that of Taiwan and South Korea. New data for China show a marked improvement in each of the four indicators. Memories of Tianenmen Square linger, but China's national
potential and commitment to achieving market-driven economic growth continue to elevate that country's prospects as a future high-tech competitor. Efforts by India to encourage more foreign investment appear to be paying off, as suggested by
the sizeable improvement in the indicator measuring its socioeconomic infrastructure. Nevertheless, Malaysia continues to be the standout among the EAEs.
