President signs H.R. 255, Promoting Women in Entrepreneurship; House Research and Technology Subcommittee to hold hearing on NSF; Continuing Resolution funding government agencies

March 3, 2017

U.S. Capitol

On Feb. 28, President Trump signed into law H.R. 255, the Promoting Women in Entrepreneurship Act. It authorizes NSF to encourage its entrepreneurship programs to recruit and support women to extend their focus beyond the laboratory and into the commercial world. The House passed the measure, introduced by Rep. Elizabeth Esty (D-CT), on Jan. 10. The Senate approved it on Feb. 14.

During the bill signing ceremony in the Oval Office, Trump said that "the Promoting Women in Entrepreneurship Act, enables the National Science Foundation to support women inventors -- which there are many -- researchers, and scientists in bringing their discoveries to the business world, championing science and entrepreneurship, and creating new ways to improve people's lives. So important." The President signed H.R. 321, the Inspiring the Next Space Pioneers, Innovators, Researchers, and Explorers (INSPIRE) Women Act that requires NASA to encourage girls to study science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), pursue careers in aerospace and advance U.S. space exploration at the same ceremony.

The House Research and Technology Subcommittee of the House Science, Space and Technology Committee will hold a hearing on March 9 on NSF overview and oversight. NSF Director France A. Córdova and Allison Lerner, NSF Inspector General, are the witnesses.

The short-term continuing resolution that is funding federal government operations runs through April 28, 2017. Congress will have to act to fund government agencies beyond that date. The House Appropriations Committee announced that the FY 2017 Department of Defense Appropriations bill, one of 12 regular appropriations bills, will be considered on the House floor the week of March 6. NSF is funded by the Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies appropriations bill.
