For innovative research defining the mechanism of cytokinesis in the model inverterbrate organism, C. elegans, and for applying insights from the system to mammalism and plant cells. She also is recognized for strong dedication to education by developing a "systems biology" (genomics, proteomics and bioinformatics) course, and by mentoring and serving as a role model for Native American students.
