wind tunnel apparatus

A basic wind tunnel apparatus. Floor samples seeded with particles are placed in the test section and images of the particles on the flooring surface are taken over time. The images are analyzed to determine the relationship between particle detachment and friction velocity.

interior of an experimental chamber for particles

The inside experimental chamber. Flooring samples are kept in a filtered, temperature and humidity controlled cabinet (A). Flooring samples seeded with particles are then tested using a mechanical foot apparatus designed to mimic a human walking using electronically-controlled actuators (B). Particle concentrations are monitored and re-suspension characteristics can be compared for various types of flooring.
