About the series
The Hybrid Fall 2024 Advisory Committee for Cyberinfrastructure (ACCI) will meet onsite at the National Science Foundation and available via Zoom Webinar on September 12th and September 13th. The meeting times for both days is 10:00am to 4:00pm Eastern.
All are welcome at the meeting of this NSF-wide advisory committee.
The purpose of the ACCI is to advise NSF on the agency’s plans and programmatic strategies to develop and support a state-of-the-art cyberinfrastructure that enables significant advances across all fields of science and engineering.

Fall (HYBRID) Meeting, September 12-13, 2024
Day 1 (September 12, 2024)
ACCI Welcome, Committee Introductions, and Review of Agenda
Ruth Marinshaw and Hakizumwami Birali Runesha, ACCI Co-Chairs Ruth Marinshaw, ACCI Co-chair, began the Spring 2024 ACCI meeting by greeting everyone on behalf of the co-chairs and ACCI members. Ruth reviewed the agenda and administrative items for participants.
Members in attendance are listed in the minutes in the Appendix.
Updates from the Office of Advanced Cyberinfrastructure (OAC)
Katerina Antypas, Office Director, OAC
Ruth Marinshaw introduced OAC Office Director Katie Antypas. Katie provided an update on OAC awards including Strengthening the Cyberinfrastructure Professionals Ecosystem (SCIPE), National Deep Inference Fabric (NDIF), and the Leadership Class Computing Facility (LCCF). There was a discussion regarding metrics and usage in respect to OAC programs.
Amy Walton provided an update on the National Discovery Cloud for Climate (NDC-C).
Katie continued with an update on the National AI Research Resource (NAIRR) Pilot .A discussion regarding facilitating partnerships in emerging communicates followed.
Updates from the Computer & Information Sharing & Engineering (CISE) Directorate
Gregory Hager, Assistant Director, CISE
Ruth introduced CISE Assistant Director Gregory Hager. Gregory provided an overview of the CISE Directorate, a vision for computing, resilient and reliable systems, Formal Methods in the Field (FMitF), National Strategic Computing Reserve (NSCR), and the NSF budget status.
A discussion regarding interagency opportunities, artificial intelligence, quantum computing, international partnerships, underserved and under-resourced communities, and data bias.
Open Discussion with OAC and CISE Management
ACCI Members, NSF Staff
There was a discussion on broadening participation in computing alliances, growing artificial intelligence institutes around the country, shaping societal impacts, and embracing reliability in systems.
Update on Cyberinfrastructure for Sustained Scientific Innovation (CSSI)
Varun Chandola, Program Director, OAC
Varun Chandola presented an overview of CSSI program and recent awards made by CSSI. A conversation regarding sustainable projects followed.
Session with the NSF Directorates
ACCI Members, NSF Staff, NAIRR Pilot Subcommittee Co-chairs
The session began with an introduction by Birali, followed by introductions of the NSF Assistant Directors. Conversation topics included how the NSF Directorates respond to artificial intelligence resources, potential plans for leveraging the NAIRR, cyberinfrastructure challenges, and emerging areas of focus.
OAC Updates on Tracking Outcomes
Amy Walton, Rediet Woldeselassie, Sonam Ahluwalia
Birali introduced Amy Walton, Rediet Woldeselassie, and Sonam Ahluwalia. Amy continued by outlining the recommendations from the most recent Committee of Visitors (COV) report. Sonam discussed OAC’s current progress on the COV recommendations and lessons learned. A conversation regarding how to find and reuse materials for educational purposes followed and identifying metadata for analysis.
Final Thoughts and Adjourn for the Day
Birali concluded the day by reflecting on the day’s topics with ACCI members and reviewing the agenda for Day 2.
Day 2 (September 13, 2024)
ACCI Welcome and Review of Agenda

Birali began the Day 2 of the meeting with a review of the agenda and administrative reminders for the ACCI members.
Update from NAIRR Pilot Subcommittee
Tilak Agerwala and Roscoe Giles (NAIRR Pilot Subcommittee Co-Chairs), ACCI Members
Rosoe Giles began with member introductions followed by an overview of the subcommittee’s activities, four potential focus areas, and concluded with an open discussion between ACCI members and subcommittee members. There was a short discussion on the benefit of an interagency panel to bring in knowledge on other programs and perspectives connected to NAIRR activity.
Session with the Office of the Director
Sethuraman Panchanathan (Director, NSF), ACCI Members NSF Director Panchanathan highlighted how the NSF supports and complements the growing number of state and regional computing, data, and AI-related consortium initiatives. Director Panchanathan expanded on these topics by discussing the NAIRR and other NSF infrastructure funding efforts. He concluded by discussing ways the NAIRR Pilot Subcommittee could support the buildup of the NAIRR and its resources in a timely and effective way.
Fall Meeting Reflections and Farewell to Departing ACCI Members
ACCI Members
Ruth Marinshaw began the final session with acknowledging the three departing members: Romie Amaro, Patrick Heimbach, and Valerie Taylor. The members made farewell remarks to the ACCI. Ruth continued by asking members for feedback for the Spring 2025 meeting.
