SUMMARY:NSF Growing Convergence Research Lecture: Knowledge Systems Decomp
osition and Integration in Transdisciplinary Convergence
CONTACT:Rebecca Morss reellis@nsf.gov (703) 292-7161
DESCRIPTION:Knowledge Systems Decomposition and Integration in Transdiscipl
 inary ConvergenceThursday, Oct. 29, 2026, 3-4 p.m. EDTAbstract:Knowledge s
ystems are an integral but often invisible element of human knowledge-maki
ng and organization, especially in specialized ways of knowing that occur
in scientific, professional, organizational, or community settings. Transd
isciplinary convergence research frequently requires unpacking and then in
tegrating across knowledge systems, often including multiple scientific kn
owledge systems as well as professional, organizational, or community know
ledge systems operating among study participants or collaborators. This ta
lk will define knowledge systems, describe their application to scientific
and transdisciplinary convergence, and provide examples from different ki
nds of projects. Particular attention will be paid to knowledge systems ap
plications in socio-technological settings that involve convergence across
human and engineering ways of knowing. This event is part of the U.S. Nati
onal Science Foundation Growing Convergence Research (NSF GCR) Lecture ser
ies. NSF GCR supports teams that intentionally integrate knowledge, method
s, and expertise across multiple scientific and engineering domains to cre
ate new research ecosystems capable of transformative breakthroughs. By fo
stering shared conceptual frameworks and deep collaboration, the program a
ims to generate solutions that cannot be achieved within the boundaries of
any single discipline. By rapidly incubating intellectual integration, or
convergence, across scientific disciplines, NSF seeks to open new frontie
rs in science and engineering.Presenter:Clark A. MillerDirector, Center fo
